Dr. Jon Callanan

Dr. Jon Callanan

Dr. Jon Callanan grew up in Belmont, Massachusetts and attended the college of the Holy Cross. He received his B.A. from Holy Cross in 1998 majoring in history. He was also the captain of the men's ice hockey team. After graduating, Dr. Callanan spent two years abroad playing professional hockey.

Dr. Callanan would hang up his skates and work at the family practice until his acceptance to veterinary school. Like his father before him, he would receive his degree in veterinary medicine from the University College Dublin. After graduation in 2008, he would join the family practice. Dr. Callanan has a strong interest in surgery and in client education. Dr. Callanan is a member of the Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA). He currently lives in Waltham with his wife and son and their dog, Bruschi.

 

Dr. Joy Alleman

Dr. Joyce Alleman

Dr. Joy Alleman is a native of western Massachusetts, earned a business degree from Bay Path College and a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from UMass Amherst.  Before attending veterinary school, she was a passionate wildlife rehabilitator and also worked at the world renowned Salk Institute in La Jolla, CA.  She graduated from the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine in 1998, after which she practiced in the San Francisco Bay area before returning to Massachusetts. 

Dr. Alleman joined Massachusetts Animal Medical Center in August of 2000. She enjoys all aspects of general practice, working to keep pets happy and healthy through every stage of life, with a special interest in geriatric wellness.  Additionally, she volunteers her surgical skills at MSPCA Nevins Farm and also for the Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society.  Dr. Alleman is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association.

She shares her home with her chocolate Lab, Genie, and her cat, Sally.  In her spare time she enjoys hiking with her dog, gardening, and many other activities outdoors, as well as volunteering with Genie who is a Caring Canines Visiting Therapy Dog.

 

Dr. Kristin Esterbrook

Dr. Esterbrook graduated from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in St. Kitts, West Indies.  She completed her clinical rotations at The University of Missouri.  Dr. Esterbrook started with us as a veterinary technician in 1994.  She then went to veterinary school and has been part of our team since graduating in June of 2001. 

Dr. Esterbrook is an accredited veterinarian with the USDA.  She is a member of the AVMA, MVMA, and the American Veterinary Dental Society.  She lives locally with her 14 year old cat Teensy.  

 

Dr. Kevin Callanan

Dr. Kevin Callanan

Dr .Kevin Callanan graduated from the University College Dublin in 1969.  For over forty years he has been the original practice owner, veterinarian and manager of the Brighton Animal Hospital.  His dream of a family practice was fulfilled when sons, Neil, Jon and Charles joined his practice.  With a lot of hard work and help from his sons he has been able to open two modern facilities of veterinary medicine in Watertown, Massachusetts and Warwick, Rhode Island.  The ability to offer high quality medicine to the animals of the New England gives him almost as much pleasure as his ten grandchildren.  Although he is semi-retired, Dr. Callanan still enjoys collaborating with his associates and offering his surgical expertise when needed.  

When not working at his hospitals, Dr. Callanan and his wife, Jane, can be found reading on their porch at the Cape with their dog, Bentley, at their feet.

 

Dr. Kara Ryczek

Dr. Kara Ryczek was born and raised in Longmeadow, MA.  She attended Trinity College in Hartford, CT where she earned a bachelor's degree in biology in 1996.  She then graduated from Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2001.  Following veterinary school, she completed a one year internship in small animal medicine and surgery at VCA South Shore, in South Weymouth, MA.  Dr. Ryczek joined the team at MAMC in 2007.  In addition to general medicine, she has a special interest in emergency medicine. 

She is a member of the AVMA, MVMA, and VANS.  When not practicing veterinary medicine, Dr. Ryczek lives in Sudbury where she enjoys spending time with her husband, young son, and 14 year old cat, Teke.
